Almost 50,000 People Sign Petition Demanding The Release Of The Grooming Gangs Review
Nearly 50,000 people have signed a petition which aims to demand the government to release the current research into the characteristics of grooming gangs.
Since it has more than 10,000 signatures the government has to respond to the petition. However, the government doesn’t have to debate the notion until the petition reaches 100k signatures.
This comes just after a document was leaked from the Home Office which stated that they have refused to publish the document and claimed it was not in the “public interest”.
According to the petition, it states that “We, the British public, demand the release of the official research on grooming gangs undertaken by the government in full.”
In a letter to The Independent, officials said they had applied a “public-interest test”, but the information was exempt from the FoI act because it could be used for government policy and included “operationally sensitive” information from police.
“The information could be misleading if made public and used out of context,” the letter added.
“We recognise that this topic in general and any insight and learning are matters of strong public interest, although it does not necessarily follow that it is in the public interest to disclose any specific information relating to it.”
